Brief

This was a hackathon design project completed during the 2022 University of Washington WINFO Hackathon. By teaming up with two other undergraduate students, we created Foound using Figma within 48 hours. Since everything was gradually recovered from COVID-19, the main theme of this Hackathon is “Embracing The New”

Problem Statement

During the Covid-19 pandemic period, we found that the level of physical activity was significantly reduced due to the quarantine. Moreover, we also observe Seattle’s local foodservice and businesses are impacted tremendously due to the maintaining social distance and stay-at-home order.

Goals:

1. Encourage people to have more outdoor activities such as jogging or walking.

2. Provide a rewarding food discount coupon if the user achieves a certain level of exercise.

3. Help local small businesses to survive and recover after the COVID-19 pandemic by helping to promote their service.

Feature #1: Coupon Access

Since the main goal of Foound is to encourage people to have more outdoor activities by using a rewarding system of providing local restaurants’ coupons, users can check the status of their coupon. They can also check their Wishlist coupon to see how much exercise they still need to achieve for receiving that coupon.

Feature #2: Exercise

Users can choose different exercise modes and start exercising. They can see how many calories are burned when ending the workout.

Feature #3: Exercise Networking

Users can access the networking function by adding friends to see their exercise level, which increases a fun way of competition. Friends can also chat with each other for exercising together.

Feature #4: Map Access

Users can check their activity map to find local restaurants and parks nearby.

Reflection

Since this is a short 48-hour Hackathon project, we learned how to conduct research and prototype in a limited time. Teamworking is an essential part of these two days. Big thanks to both of my teammates who contributed amazing ideas and stayed up late with me together. The process was enjoyable and we see how our initial idea grew into a final product in the end. Although our project was not selected as the finalist, we learned many brilliant ideas from other teams and realized how to improve the concept of our product. For example, we should narrow the functions to decrease the complexity of overall tasks, make the information architecture more consistent, and create a design system.
